Are you interested in starting an online business? As digital entrepreneurship skyrockets, physical shops are becoming a thing of the past. Amsterdam is one of the best places to operate your online business as it’s an international hub.

All you need to start your own business online is a laptop and a good idea…

…but make sure you take all the appropriate steps!

Here we lay out the first steps you’ll need to take to start your online business in the Netherlands.

Step 1 – Check if you fulfill all the requirements of the Dutch government for starting an online business

• You can check the Dutch government’s requirements here

Step 2 – Register with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK)

• Don’t have a business address? You can get apply for a “virtual office” here:
  • A virtual office is a business address that you can use to register at the chamber of commerce (KVK). Amsterdam Office Space is located in the center of Amsterdam, so you can have your business address at an accessible and professional location.
• Once you have a business address, KVK registration is possible.

Step 3 – Sort out your bank account

• To conduct business in the Netherlands, you’ll need to have an IBAN account from a Dutch bank. This allows you to receive SEPA bank transfers.
• The leading Dutch Banks to choose from are:
  • ABN Amro
  • ING
  • Rabobank

Step 4 – Create your website

• First, you’ll need to register your domain name (URL)
  • First, check if it is available, and then choose a registrar to register the domain name for you. This can be done here
• Then, you must of course build the website
  • You can use a website builder, if you have no experience with coding, or WordPress, if you have a bit of experience with coding

Step 5 – Get Started! 

• Starting up your business will be the most difficult part, but the best thing you can do is just start! The rest will fall into place through trial and error.
